The results from the above upgraded netted Steve 226rwhp in Shoot-out mode on Chipmaster's Dyno Dynamics Dyno. Testing down at the Motorplex resulted inconsistent low 14 sec ¼ mile results, followed by a 13.9 sec with a couple of extra tweaks. Although Steve was happy with the above modifications, power output and achievements, there was always the itch for a bit more. Having seen Michael reel off some consistent 12 sec passes with his Intercooled SS, Steve decided it was time for him to achieve 12 sec fame. The Intercooler was the obvious choice for the next upgrade, with over 40 - 50rwhp in gains said to be achieved. The opportunity for further development of the Intercooler presented itself at FIT at virtually the same time Steve decided it was time to go the cooler. FIT worked out an amicable price for the fitment of the Intercooler system to Steve's Red VX and the process commenced. FIT's workshop was trialling some new revisions to the adaptor plate, as well as new designs of CAI, so the installation process took 2 days, instead of the usual 1 day. Next it was off to Daniel from Chipmaster to get tuned. The initial dyno runs revealed improvements from the addition of the intercooler system, but nothing on a grand scale. The output had been lifted from 226rwhp to 232rwhp, a gain of around 6rwhp, nothing to write home to mum about. What then evolved after Daniel got stuck into the tuning side of things was what we were interested in. With a couple of masterful keystrokes power was up considerably, 242rwhp followed by 258rwhp, then 263rwhp, all achieved relatively easily from Daniels tuning experience. We let the motor cool down and rest for a little while, then started the final fine tuning tweaks. The next couple of numbers we saw was 272rwhp followed by 276rwhp!! At that stage we decided we were quite happy with the results and we left it there. We had a couple more items to try, like bigger MAF, Bigger Throttle Body, and Bigger 'U' Bend section, but we'll save them for the future. A 50rwhp gain was right on target and Steve was more than happy with the abundant gain in power. A quick drive on the streets revealed huge increases in the amount of pull the car had through the gears, and the torque was just incredible. We always knew the intercooler would add big power, and now it has been proven for a 3rd time for an FIT in-house Development. The net results of the addition of the intercooler with tuning were: Power is up by a full 50 rwhp!! Torque is up by 110 FtLb's!! A picture says a 1,000 words. Look at the attached dyno result for the evidently huge increases. Look how initially power 'noses-over' at around 5,000rpm, then after the addition of the intercooler and tuning power is still incredibly strong at 6,000rpm!! Also look how much 'bulkier' the torque curve is and how much sooner it is generated!! We are predicting this car will now be easily good for 12 sec ¼ mile passes with improved traction for slick tyres, as street tyres just won't cut it with this type of power and torque delivery. On the road, any speed in 1st gear rolling start and nailing the throttle will result in instant savage wheel spin. The whole car is so much more powerful and pleasurable to drive, and will keep Steve grinning from ear to ear for a long time to come
